# USDT Networks: TRC20 vs BEP20 vs ERC20

> **Quick answer**
> There's only one USDT, but it moves on **different networks (blockchains)**. The most common ones on exchanges are **TRC20** (the Tron network), **BEP20** (BNB Smart Chain) and **ERC20** (Ethereum). There's one rule you never bend: **the network you choose when you withdraw must be the same network the deposit address supports.** Pick the wrong network and you can lose your funds with no way to get them back.

| | |
|---|---|
| **Most common networks** | TRC20 · BEP20 · ERC20 |
| **The golden rule** | Same network on both ends |
| **Fees** | Vary by network, and show on the withdrawal screen before you confirm |
| **First time sending to a new address** | Send a small test amount |

## What does a USDT "network" mean?

USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the dollar and issued by **Tether**. The same coin exists on several blockchains, and each blockchain is a separate "network" with its own addresses, fees and speed.

Think of networks as different courier companies: it's the same parcel (USDT), but if you hand it to a courier that doesn't deliver to the recipient's address, it never arrives.

## The 3 most common networks on exchanges

| Network | Blockchain | Address format | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| **TRC20** | Tron | Starts with the letter **T** | One of the networks Tether officially issues USDT on |
| **ERC20** | Ethereum | Starts with **0x** | One of the networks Tether officially issues USDT on |
| **BEP20** | BNB Smart Chain | Starts with **0x** | Not on Tether's official USDT list; the USDT there is a pegged version run by Binance |

According to Tether's official page, USDT is also active on Solana, TON, Avalanche and other networks, and Tether has **stopped** issuing it on older networks such as Omni, EOS and Algorand.

> ⚠️ **Careful:** **BEP20 and ERC20 addresses look identical** (both start with 0x). So an exchange may accept the address even if you pick the wrong one of the two. Don't rely on "the address was accepted". **Check the network name itself.**

## How to pick the right network (3 questions)

1. **Which networks does the receiving side support?** Open the **deposit** page on the receiving exchange or wallet, select USDT, and look at the networks listed.
2. **Which networks can you withdraw on?** The withdrawal screen shows the available networks and the fee for each.
3. **Pick a network that's on both lists**, ideally the cheapest one. The actual fee shows on the withdrawal screen before you confirm.

> 💡 **Moving funds between two accounts on the same exchange?** On Binance you can send to another Binance user by email, phone number or Binance ID, **with no network to choose at all**. It's easier and safer if both of you are on Binance.

## How to withdraw on the right network

1. On the receiving exchange: **[Deposit]** → choose **USDT** → choose the network → **copy the address**.
2. On the sending exchange: **Withdraw** → **USDT** → paste the address → choose **the same network**.
3. If the receiving exchange gave you a **memo (Memo/Tag)**, copy that too.
4. Check the fee and the final amount, then confirm with two-factor authentication.
5. First time using this address? **Send a small test amount**, and once it arrives, send the rest.

## What is a memo (Memo/Tag)?

Some coins and networks use **one shared address** for every user on an exchange, and the memo is the number that identifies **your account**. Some exchanges call it a "Tag" or "Payment ID".

- If the receiving exchange shows you a memo, **you must enter it** when you withdraw.
- Sending without a required memo can lose your funds or delay them.
- USDT on TRC20, BEP20 and ERC20 usually doesn't need a memo; memos are common with coins like XRP.

## I picked the wrong network: what happens?

Binance states clearly that depositing on the wrong network **can lose your funds with no way to recover them**. But there's one case where there's hope:

- **Between BEP20 and ERC20:** the addresses are identical, so the coins are usually sitting at the same address, just on the other network. **If the address belongs to a wallet whose private key you hold**, you can usually reach them from a wallet that supports both networks.
- **If the address is on an exchange or a custodial wallet (you don't hold the key):** recovery depends entirely on that platform, and it may not be possible.

**What to do right away:** contact the receiving platform's support from inside the app, with the **transaction ID (TxID)**, the address, and the network you used.

## Frequently asked questions

**What's the difference between TRC20 and BEP20?**
TRC20 runs on the Tron network and its addresses start with the letter T; BEP20 runs on BNB Smart Chain and its addresses start with 0x. What matters most: pick a network both sides support.

**Which network is cheapest?**
Fees vary by network and change over time. Compare the fee shown for each network on the withdrawal screen before you choose.

**Can I send USDT from TRC20 to a BEP20 address?**
No. The network has to be the same on both ends.

**Is USDT on BEP20 the same as official USDT?**
Inside Binance its value is pegged the same way, but according to Tether's official list, Tether doesn't issue it directly on BNB Smart Chain; it's a pegged version.

**What is a USDT TRC20 wallet?**
Any USDT deposit address on the Tron network. On Binance: [Deposit] → USDT → TRC20 network → copy the address.

**Do I need a memo for USDT?**
Usually not on TRC20, BEP20 or ERC20. But if the receiving exchange shows a memo, enter it.

**I sent on the wrong network. Is my money gone?**
Not necessarily, especially between BEP20 and ERC20 if the wallet is yours. Contact the receiving platform's support right away, with the transaction ID.
